7.5b  Context and Focus Selections: Romans

"Pray without ceasing."

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18

Using these study arrangements, you can lead a Four Step Bible Study to pray through an entire book of the Bible, from beginning to end. It provides the Context Scripture and Focus Scripture for each meeting. It is designed to provide a large enough Context Scripture to enhance understanding of the Focus Scripture . The Focus Scripture will be short enough to be digested during one meeting.

The Four Step Bible Study has been designed to train disciples to properly interact with scripture in a group setting and also in each member's personal daily devotional. Click here to use the Four Step Bible Study in your personal daily devotion.

You may do all of the meeting arrangements as a group. Or you may do all of the meeting arrangements individually. You may also combine both approaches. For example, You could do meeting arrangements 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, etc in your weekly meetings. Members would do the other arrangements individually, in between the group meetings. You could also do odd arrangements as a group and even arrangements individually.

Romans contains long sections of theology. Its themes may span several chapters while developing subthemes may cover half a chapter or more. So, it is more difficult to study this book in small sections at a time, while only revisiting the book weekly.

Therefore I suggest:

  • Study one of the shorter books using the Four steps before you try Romans.
  • When you study Romans, commit time each day to the book. For two weeks, read the book every day to God, from beginning to end, in one sitting. Alternatively, you may listen to the book. I found that after hearing the book fifteen times, I began to understand the flow of thought, so I could hear each verse in its proper context. I really get a strong understanding after I have heard a book forty times. You will not understand Romans without much diligent seeking on your part, and that must be done in the Spirit and prayerfully (Proverbs 2:3-5, James 4:2). This is true of all scripture, but it become more obvious with Romans.
