7.1  Scripture Readings for Opening Prayers: Learning to Pray

Scripture tells us what to pray...

so that we may walk by the Spirit.

The Group Leader will ask someone in the group to read one of the following scriptures. Then the Group Leader will pray.

1) God's Will

"For this cause, we also, since the day we heard this, don't cease praying and making requests for you, that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding" (Colossians 1:9, 4.2c).

Hint: After the scripture reference, is the subchapter reference (4.2c). So, you may read an explanation of this scripture in subchapter 4.2, paragraph c.

2) Obedience

"Now I pray to God that you do no evil" (2 Corinthians 13:7, 4.3f).

Prayerful Observation:
We come to know God's will in the first scripture, the prayer for knowledge of God's will. We are granted obedience through the second scripture, the prayer of obedience. So, knowing God's will and doing God's will come by prayer. This is walking by the Spirit. It is by prayer that we walk by the Spirit (subchapter 4.7).

3) Praise Him Continually

"Through Him then, let's continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips praising His name" (Hebrews 13:15, 4.5).

4) Revelation

"For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which you have toward all the saints, 16 don't cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him" (Ephesians 1:15-17, 4.2d).

5) Strength

"I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person" (Ephesians 3:14-16, 4.3d).

6) Wisdom

"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. For that man shouldn't think that he will receive anything from the Lord" (James 1:5-7, 4.2a).

7) Love, Knowledge and Discernment

"This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God" (Philippians 1:9-11, 4.3e).

8) Pray Without Ceasing

"Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you." (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18, 4.5c)

9) Unity

Jesus prayed for the disciples, "20 Not for these only do I pray, but for those also who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me" (John 17:20-21, 4.4d).

10) Pray About Everything

"In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God" (Philippians 4:6. Click here for more information.)

11) Unfailing Faith

"The Lord said, "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have all of you, that he might sift you as wheat, 32 but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn't fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers" (Luke 22:31-32, 4.3a).

12) Ask for Spiritual Gifts

"Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret" (1Corinthians 14:13, 4.6d).

13) Forgiveness

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, 4.3i).

14) Words for Witnessing

"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints: on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News" (Ephesians 6:17-19).
(4.2b)

15) Tranquility and Salvation

"I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:1-4, 4.4f).

16) Lead Me Not Into Temptation

"Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one" (Part of the Lord's Prayer from Luke 11:4, 4.3h).

17) Heal Our Spiritual Illnesses

"Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praises.  Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:13-15, Deliverance from spiritual weakness, 4.3k).

18) Strength

"1 Hear my cry, God. Listen to my prayer2 From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I" (Psalm 61:1-2, 4.3c).

19) Salvation

"Brothers, my heart's desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved" (Romans 10:1, 4.4e).

20) Open Doors for the Gospel

"Continue steadfastly in prayer, watching in it with thanksgiving, praying together for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds, that I may reveal it as I ought to speak" (Colossians 4:2-4, 4.4c).

21) Watch in Prayer

22) Pray at All Times

28) Help in Time of War

"1 Blessed be Yahweh, my rock, who teaches my hands to war, and my fingers to battle... 6 Throw out lightning, and scatter them. Send out your arrows, and rout them... 11 Rescue me, and deliver me out of the hands of foreigners, whose mouths speak deceit" (Psalm 144:1,6,11, 4.6c).

Walk by the Spirit

"Walk by the Spirit" is a scriptural term. We see it only in Galatians 5:16 and 5:25. It is the same thing as certain other scriptural terms you may be familiar with. For example: , "Abide in me" or "Remain in me" (John 15:7), "following the Lamb" (Revelation 14:4), "walk in the light" (1John 1:7) and "Fellowship with God"(1 John 1:3 and 2  Corinthians 13:14). All of these terms are synonymous with "Walk by the Spirit". Walking by the Spirit is explained in detail from the scriptures in subchapter 4.7. It is through scriptural prayer that we walk by the Spirit.

Everything we do is to be done for, through and with God.

Please prayerfully consider these words of God in your heart. Yield to him!

Everything: "bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ"
For: "whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
Through: "apart from me, you can do nothing"
With: "Pray without ceasing"
With: "...Where I am, there my servant will also be..." (Jesus is speaking)
2 Corinthians 10:5, 1 Corinthians 10:31, John 15:5, 1 Thessalonians 5:16 and John 12:26
