The Acts 2:42 Three Legged Stool: Scripture, Fellowship and Prayer

Day 8

"They continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer. "

Acts 2:42

Prayer

In Your word Father, You have revealed what happened after the disciples were filled with Your Holy Spirit at Pentecost in roughly 30 AD. In this scripture I see the three critical pillars of spiritual growth and disciple making ministry:

  • Prayer
  • The Word
  • Fellowship.

You have said in Your word that we are to pray:

  • at all times
  • continually
  • always
  • in everything
  • without ceasing4.12

You have also told us regarding Your word

  • "My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge." (Hosea 4:6).
  • "long for the pure milk of the Word, that with it you may grow" (1 Peter 2:2)

So, we must be nourished in Your word to grow spiritually.

In Acts 2:42 above, breaking bread  meant that they had fellowship with each other as they broke bread together in each other's homes (Acts :42-47). Hebrews 10:25 tells us to not forsake assembling together but instead to assemble and exhort one another. Your word also says that "each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all" (1 Corinthians 12:7). We can not profit from the exhortation of other believers and the spiritual gifts of other believers if we don't get together for fellowship.

Over more than half a century, You have proved these things to me. These three are critical to spiritual growth: prayer, Your word and fellowship.

These three have been like a three legged stool.

If any one of these was lacking in my life, my spiritual life suffered.  I suffered very much until I was supported by all three at the same time.

If I neglect any of prayer, fellowship or Your word, I can not walk by the Spirit.

Your word is true. Your word is life. You deserve all praise!

Draw me my Lord, irresistibly into scriptural prayer and fellowship with Your people. This I pray for Your glory... that Your name be lifted higher and higher and higher!

Amen.
