Yahweh is My Shepherd: Commentary on Psalm 23

This is the sixth prayer in the prayer acronym, T.H.E. W.A.Y.

The left navigation arrow (<) and right navigation arrow (>) above will take you through all of the prayers in THE WAY.

Y:  Yahweh is my shepherd! (Psalm 23)

  • "Yahweh is my shepherd. I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over. Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh's house forever" (Psalm 23).

Prayerful Observations

Yahweh is the personal name of God.  If your version of the Bible reads LORD instead of Yahweh, the translators have chosen to replace God's personal name with the title LORD. This is probably explained in your Bible's introduction, preface or principles of translation. To learn more about this practice, click here

The name Yahweh encompasses all three persons of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 states,

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19).

Name is singular. Yahweh includes all three. Yahweh is the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. If one were to disagree, I would ask... what then is the name of the Holy Spirit? We have been given no other name for the Holy Spirit in scripture. So, it must be Yahweh.

Jesus said,  "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep" (John 10:11).

Now that you know who Yahweh is, you can pray Psalm 23 to God. Yes, Jesus was shepherding them in the Old Covenant. Now he shepherds us in the New Covenant. To learn about the transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant, click here.
